Shofukuji was constructed in 1195 by Eisai, shortly after the priest had returned from China in order to introduce the Rinzai Zen sect to Japan. As a result, Shofukuji is considered Japan's first Zen temple. Its beautiful, wooden buildings, however, have been destroyed several times by fires over the centuries.
